Many college freshmen hardly think about how the effects of sleep play into their college experience. Sleep too little, however, and you’ll be exhausted. Sleep too much and you’re late for class!
Learning how to balance sleep with everything else you’re doing in college is extremely important for your enjoyment of these short four years. Here are three tips to help you get the sleep you need while also having a blast before you graduate!
1. Don’t Do Schoolwork in Bed
This point can’t be stressed enough. Working in bed is a terrible habit and will mess up your sleep cycle as well as your study habits.
When you study in bed, your brain becomes confused. It knows that this is the place you come to get shuteye, and therefore you will feel exhausted very quickly.
When you study in bed, you’ll be hard pressed to get through five pages of reading without wanting to put the book aside and curl up in the sheets. Try reading the same book while sitting at your desk, however, and your energy levels will be much higher.
If you study in bed, your brain won’t know if it really is okay to shut down at the end of the day. It will become more difficult to fall asleep when you need to, and the quality of your sleep will be lower as well.
2. Work Out Bedtime Norms With Roommates
Nothing is worse than trying to fall asleep late at night only to have a roommate burst in with a group of friends. The lights fly on and all that time you put into winding down is wasted. Once again, you’re wide-awake.
Even if your roommate isn’t one to regularly bring friends home, it is important to agree on dedicated times for silence. A late night of studying for your roommate can mean a long night of listening to keyboard clicks for you.
The most challenging part about nights like this is that you know your roommate isn’t intentionally being loud. This makes it hard to ask them to leave for a dorm study room.
Establish normal bedtime rules with your roommate early. Not doing so can lead to the above situations happening all too frequently. This, in turn, can lead to a slow buildup of stress and resentment due to loss of sleep.
3. Don’t Continually Skip On Sleep For Schoolwork
Missing sleep so that you can study late into the night is all right once in a while. Regularly getting less than eight hours, however, will destroy your enjoyment of college.
Some students with hard classes will go months with less than six hours of sleep per night. This only leads to stress and a general lack of enjoyment of the opportunities that college has to provide.
Many college students don’t take this advice seriously enough. In doing so, they become irritable and short-tempered. Give your body what it needs and know that when it tells you it needs sleep, it means it!
